How to Calculate Roof Square Footage

Roof area is not the same as floor area. Because roofs slope, the actual surface area is larger than the building's footprint. The steeper the pitch, the greater the difference. Roofers use a "pitch multiplier" to convert flat footprint area to true roof surface area. The Pitch Multiplier Method

Roof pitch is expressed as rise over run — e.g., 6:12 means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. To find the pitch multiplier: √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12. For a 6:12 pitch, that's √(36 + 144) ÷ 12 = 1.118.

Roofing Squares

A "roofing square" is 100 sq ft. Shingles, underlayment, and other materials are priced per square. Divide total roof area by 100 to get the number of squares. Three bundles of standard three-tab shingles cover one square.

Accounting for Overhangs

Roofing Material Estimation Guide

Asphalt Shingles

The most common roofing material in North America. Standard three-tab shingles require 3 bundles per square. Architectural (dimensional) shingles may need 4–5 bundles per square due to their thicker profile. Always order 10% extra for ridge caps, waste, and starter strips.

Metal Roofing

Standing seam and corrugated metal are priced per square foot or per panel. Calculate your roof area, add 10–15% for overlaps and trim, and include ridge caps and flashing in your material list. Metal roofing is more expensive upfront but lasts 40–70 years.

Underlayment and Ice Shield

Synthetic underlayment covers the entire roof deck. Rolls cover 1,000 sq ft each with 4-inch overlaps (effective coverage ~900 sq ft). Ice and water shield should cover the first 3 feet of eave on all edges in cold climates.

Flat Roof Materials

TPO, EPDM, and modified bitumen are measured in squares just like shingles. Flat roofs still need slight slope (¼ inch per foot) for drainage. Factor in parapet walls and penetrations (vents, HVAC curbs) when calculating material needs.
