Measuring outside wall
Interior area should be measured from inside wall faces. Exterior measurements overestimate by the wall thickness on every side.
Forgetting the triangle
Diagonal walls create triangular sections. Ignoring them means you'll undercount (if extending out) or overcount (if cut off) by that triangle's area.
Using perimeter instead of area
Perimeter (distance around) is NOT area (space inside). A 40 ft perimeter could be 100 sq ft (10×10) or 75 sq ft (15×5). Always multiply L × W.
Mixing units
Measuring one wall in feet and another in inches without converting will give wildly wrong results. Convert everything to one unit first.
