Step 2: Apply the Waste Factor
Always add a waste factor to your tile order. The industry standard is 10% for simple rectangular rooms with straight cuts. For diagonal patterns, herringbone layouts, or complex cuts around fixtures, use 15%. For very small tiles (mosaic) or first-time DIY, 20% provides a safer buffer.
Step 3: Convert to Boxes
Tile is sold in boxes, each covering a stated square footage. Divide your waste-adjusted area by the coverage per box and always round up to the next whole box. Partial boxes cannot be returned opened, and batches may vary in shade, so ordering full boxes upfront saves headaches.

To calculate the floor area for tiling, measure the length and width of the room in feet and multiply those two dimensions. For example, a 10×12 foot room has a floor area of 120 square feet (10 × 12 = 120).
Calculate the total area of the floor or wall in square feet (length × width). Then, add a waste factor of 10% to 15% to ensure you have enough material for cuts and corner fitting.
