InteractiveHow to Calculate Roof Square Footage
Roof area is not the same as floor area. Because roofs slope, the actual surface area is larger than the building's footprint. The steeper the pitch, the greater the difference. Roofers use a "pitch multiplier" to convert flat footprint area to true roof surface area.
The Pitch Multiplier Method
Roof pitch is expressed as rise over run — e.g., 6:12 means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. To find the pitch multiplier: √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12. For a 6:12 pitch, that's √(36 + 144) ÷ 12 = 1.118.
Roof Area Formula
FormulaExample: 1,200 sq ft footprint × 1.118 (6:12 pitch) = 1,342 sq ft of roof
Roofing Squares
A "roofing square" is 100 sq ft. Shingles, underlayment, and other materials are priced per square. Divide total roof area by 100 to get the number of squares. Three bundles of standard three-tab shingles cover one square.
Accounting for Overhangs
Eave overhangs add area beyond the building footprint. A 12-inch overhang on all sides adds 2 feet to both the length and width. Our calculator factors this in automatically to give you the true total surface area to cover.
Roof Pitch Multiplier Reference Table
| Pitch | Multiplier | Slope Angle | Category |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:12 | 1.003 | 4.8° | Nearly Flat |

| 4:12 | 1.054 | 18.4° | Conventional |
| 5:12 | 1.083 | 22.6° | Conventional |
| 6:12 | 1.118 | 26.6° | Conventional |
| 8:12 | 1.202 | 33.7° | Steep |
| 10:12 | 1.302 | 39.8° | Steep |
| 12:12 | 1.414 | 45.0° | Very Steep |
Roofing Material Estimation Guide
Asphalt Shingles
The most common roofing material in North America. Standard three-tab shingles require 3 bundles per square. Architectural (dimensional) shingles may need 4–5 bundles per square due to their thicker profile. Always order 10% extra for ridge caps, waste, and starter strips.
Metal Roofing
Standing seam and corrugated metal are priced per square foot or per panel. Calculate your roof area, add 10–15% for overlaps and trim, and include ridge caps and flashing in your material list. Metal roofing is more expensive upfront but lasts 40–70 years.
Underlayment and Ice Shield
Synthetic underlayment covers the entire roof deck. Rolls cover 1,000 sq ft each with 4-inch overlaps (effective coverage ~900 sq ft). Ice and water shield should cover the first 3 feet of eave on all edges in cold climates.
Flat Roof Materials
TPO, EPDM, and modified bitumen are measured in squares just like shingles. Flat roofs still need slight slope (¼ inch per foot) for drainage. Factor in parapet walls and penetrations (vents, HVAC curbs) when calculating material needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Measure the building's footprint (length × width), then multiply by the pitch multiplier for your roof slope. A 30×40 ft building with a 6:12 pitch has 1,200 sq ft footprint × 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft of roof area.
A roofing square equals 100 square feet. It's the standard unit for ordering shingles, underlayment, and other roofing materials. Divide your total roof area by 100 to get the number of squares. A 1,500 sq ft roof = 15 squares.
Standard three-tab shingles: 3 bundles per square. Architectural/dimensional shingles: 4–5 bundles per square (check the manufacturer's specs). A 15-square roof needs 45 bundles of three-tab or 60–75 bundles of architectural shingles.
From inside the attic: hold a level horizontally against a rafter, measure 12 inches out, then measure the vertical distance from level to rafter. That vertical distance is your rise. If it's 6 inches, your pitch is 6:12. You can also use a smartphone inclinometer app.
A gable roof has two sloping sides that meet at a ridge, with flat triangular ends (gables). A hip roof slopes on all four sides. Hip roofs have about 5–10% more surface area than gable roofs with the same footprint and pitch because all four sides slope.
Asphalt shingle roofs cost $3.50–$5.50 per sq ft installed ($350–$550 per square). Metal roofing runs $7–$14 per sq ft. Tile and slate can exceed $15/sq ft. These prices include materials, labor, old roof tear-off, and disposal.
Yes — eave overhangs (soffits) are part of the roof surface and need shingles and underlayment. A 12-inch overhang on a 40×30 ft building adds 2 ft to each dimension, making the effective roof footprint 42×32 ft — an extra 144 sq ft of material.
Ground-level measurements give 90–95% accuracy for simple roof shapes. For complex roofs with dormers, valleys, and multiple ridgelines, professional measurement (or drone/satellite imagery) is recommended. Our calculator handles standard gable, hip, and flat roofs precisely.
