Tiling a floor or wall starts with one measurement: the total area in square feet. Once you have the area, you can determine tile count, account for waste from cuts and breakage, and calculate how many boxes to purchase. Miscalculating here leads to costly return trips — or an unfinished job.
Step 1: Measure the Area
Measure the length and width of the floor or wall in feet. Multiply them to get the total square footage. For multiple tiled sections (like a tiled shower niche), calculate each section separately and sum them. Enter each as its own calculation.

Step 2: Apply the Waste Factor
Always add a waste factor to your tile order. The industry standard is 10% for simple rectangular rooms with straight cuts. For diagonal patterns, herringbone layouts, or complex cuts around fixtures, use 15%. For very small tiles (mosaic) or first-time DIY, 20% provides a safer buffer.
Step 3: Convert to Boxes
Tile is sold in boxes, each covering a stated square footage. Divide your waste-adjusted area by the coverage per box and always round up to the next whole box. Partial boxes cannot be returned opened, and batches may vary in shade, so ordering full boxes upfront saves headaches.

Bathroom Floor Tiling
A typical full bathroom (5 × 8 ft) covers 40 sq ft of floor. With 10% waste and 12×12 tiles, you'd need 44 tiles. For a subway-tiled shower surround, measure all four walls separately, subtract the opening, and calculate each panel independently.
Kitchen Backsplash
Kitchen backsplashes sit between countertop and cabinet — typically 18 inches tall. Measure each wall section individually, multiply by 1.5 ft height, and subtract any outlets or windows. Subway tiles (3×6 in) are popular and have minimal waste at straight installation.
Large Format Floor Tiles
Larger tiles (24×24 or 32×32 inches) cover more area per tile, so fewer tiles are needed. However, they require precise leveling and produce significant offcuts. Use 12–15% waste for large format tiles to account for leveling adjustments and edge trimming.
Outdoor Patio Tiling
Outdoor tiles must be rated for freeze-thaw cycles. Calculate the patio area (often irregular) by dividing it into rectangles. Add 15% waste for outdoor projects — cuts near curved planters, steps, and borders generate significant material waste.

Grout lines are thin (typically 1/8 to 3/16 inch) and do not significantly change tile count for normal residential projects. The standard waste factor (10%) more than covers any grout line adjustments for most layouts.
